n8n vs Zapier: two automation platforms compared

What this page compares

This page compares n8n and Zapier as workflow automation platforms. It is not a Veyrox-versus-Zapier sales page, and it is not an official n8n or Zapier document.

Veyrox is an independent AI automation agency in Cairo. We often implement n8n for clients. We did not create n8n, we do not own n8n or Zapier, and we do not claim a partnership with either vendor. You can use either platform without Veyrox.

Ease of use

Zapier is built as a self-serve cloud product: you sign up, pick apps, and assemble Zaps in their editor. That is usually faster for a first two-app connection if nobody needs to own a server.

n8n uses a node-based editor. Simple flows are still visual. Custom logic, credentials, and self-hosting take more setup than a typical Zap. Neither product is “always easier” — Zapier is usually quicker to start; n8n is usually clearer once you need branches, code, or your own host.

Customization and workflow flexibility

n8n can run custom JavaScript or Python in nodes, call REST or GraphQL APIs, use webhooks, and talk to SQL databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL. That is why teams pick it when Zapier’s apps, paths, or plan limits become the bottleneck.

Zapier supports filters, paths, and (on some plans) code steps and a large catalog of prebuilt app connections. Capability still depends on the Zapier apps and plan you have — see Zapier’s own docs. This page does not invent a feature matrix or connector count.

Hosting

n8n can be self-hosted on infrastructure you control. n8n also documents a hosted cloud option on their site. Self-hosting is the reason operators choose n8n when data residency or owning the runtime matters.

Zapier is a cloud service. Workflows run on Zapier’s infrastructure. There is no self-hosted Zapier product described here.

Integrations

Both vendors publish connector / app directories. Counts change; look up the current lists on n8n and Zapier rather than trusting a number on this page.

Beyond named apps, n8n can integrate with in-house software through standard APIs, webhooks, and SQL. Zapier’s reach is mainly the apps and webhooks available on your Zapier plan.

Pricing models — not a price list

Zapier documents subscription plans and charges based on tasks (see Zapier pricing). We do not reproduce their prices here; they change.

Self-hosted n8n does not add a Zapier-style per-task platform fee. You still pay for servers, and for anyone who builds and maintains the workflows. n8n Cloud has its own plans on n8n’s site. Veyrox, if you hire us, quotes a service in EGP after a free audit — that is agency pricing, not an n8n license.

When to stay on Zapier

Stay on Zapier when a junior can wire two cloud apps, monthly volume is low, and you do not need self-hosting, Arabic AI agents, or a custom database. Zapier is the simpler self-serve choice in that case.

When n8n is usually the better platform

Choose n8n when you need self-hosting or custom logic beyond a Zapier app. Self-hosted n8n has no Zapier-style per-task platform fee, but total cost still depends on hosting, usage, maintenance, and implementation. You can run n8n yourself if someone on the team can own hosting, credentials, and errors. If you want that stack designed and maintained, that is a services decision — see the Veyrox pages linked below. It is not required to use n8n.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Veyrox own n8n or partner with Zapier?
No. Veyrox is an independent AI automation agency. We implement n8n for clients. We do not own n8n or Zapier and do not claim a vendor partnership.
Is this an official n8n vs Zapier review?
No. It is a practice page summarizing platform differences we can stand behind. For current prices, app lists, and plan limits, use n8n’s and Zapier’s own documentation.
Can n8n replace Zapier?
For complex, high-volume, or self-hosted workflows, n8n typically offers more control. Self-hosted n8n has no Zapier-style per-task platform fee, but total cost depends on hosting, usage, maintenance, and who implements the system. For a simple two-app cloud sync, Zapier is often enough. Replacement is a fit question, not a rule.
