Conversational AI in Egypt: dialect, channels, and handoff
Most conversational AI is designed around English and website chat. Egyptian customers write differently, use different channels, and expect a different tone. That changes how a good agent is built.
How Egyptian customers actually write
A single conversation can include Egyptian Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic, English product names, and Franco-Arabic, where Arabic is written in Latin letters with numbers for some sounds, such as “3” for ع and “7” for ح. Messages are short, often split across several bubbles, and may skip greetings entirely. A conversational system needs to read all of this as one request rather than treating each line as a separate question.
Tone matters as much as accuracy
Replying to a casual Egyptian Arabic message in stiff formal Arabic feels robotic. Replying too casually to a corporate buyer feels careless. A good agent mirrors the customer’s language and level of formality within limits the business approves, and it uses the same terms your team uses for products and services.
Customers outside Egypt
Businesses serving the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the wider Gulf will see Gulf dialect phrasing and different expectations about formality. Decide early whether the agent replies in the customer’s dialect, in a neutral Arabic, or in English when the customer starts in English.
Channels people use
For many Egyptian businesses, WhatsApp is a major customer-conversation channel, with Instagram and Facebook Messenger also common. Website chat may represent a smaller share depending on the business. Put conversational AI where the messages already arrive; a widget on a page few people visit will not fix a busy WhatsApp inbox. The WhatsApp side is covered in WhatsApp AI automation.
Voice notes and images
Many customers send voice notes or photos instead of typing. Decide what should happen with them before launch: route them to a person, or, if it has been scoped and tested, process them with transcription or image understanding. An agent that ignores a voice note silently is worse than one that says a team member will listen and reply.
Handoff is part of the conversation
- Hand off when the customer asks for something the agent is not allowed to answer, such as an unapproved price
- Hand off on complaints, frustration, or repeated misunderstandings
- Tell the customer a person is taking over, so they do not repeat themselves to a silent bot
- Pass a short summary to the team member so the customer does not have to start again
Testing before go-live
Collect real examples of past messages (with personal details removed) and test against them. Include misspellings, mixed scripts, and questions that combine pricing, location, and timing. The aim is not perfect answers to everything, but correct answers to common questions and correct handoff for the rest.
